Peering Through the Keyhole
A notebook from the Nuremberg workroom of the Poor Clares Monastery was preserved by chance and has not been understood for a long time. Originating from the 15th century, the book contains 342 brocading pattern, some using beads, for tablet weavers. It offers a peek into the lives of the nuns, who were also affected by the restructuring of their order.
Brocading instructions, including much of the original texts and notations, have been transcribed and displayed next to facsimiles of the original manuscript pages. Alongside an introduction to the historical background, you will find basic instructions for brocading, weaving patterns in contemporary notation, an overview of motifs as well as a glossary. Beyond this, the close-ups provide additional information and hints for translation.
Note: "roslein und wecklein" is mediavial German dialect and means "a little rose and a little leaf."
